Concussion Management db Orthopedic Physical Therapy, PA has begun a program to assist area athletes with concussion management through a combination of cognitive and balance baseline testing. For years health care professionals and athletic trainers have been struggling with guidelines for safe return to play following a head injury to an athlete. Rushing injured players back to the field when a concussion occurs can have devastating ramifications.

Now there are research based guidelines to assist your physician, physical therapist or athletic trainer in making safe return to play determinations but it requires pre-injury, baseline testing of both your cognitive (thinking process) and balance functional status. This data is gathered during a pre-injury assessment session that is performed within our practice or on-site at your school, travel league, or recreation program. The test takes approximately 20-25 minutes to complete for each athlete. The cost of the baseline testing program is $39.95 and includes all post-injury comparative testing for up to 1 year from the date of baseline testing. Discounts are available for group or sports league testing. Call today to schedule 732-747-1262 or complete the on-line registration form.

Host David Bertone, PT, DPT, OCS interviews Stephen Rice, MD regarding Concussions in Youth Sports including the signs and symptoms and the importance of preseason baseline testing. "You and Your Health" is televised on Old Bridge Television.

"Without the concussion testing that Dr. Bertone offers, I would have begun playing too soon after my injury which possibly could have resulted in more damage to my injury. Taking the right amount of time off is the key to preventing relapses; his testing informs athletes the necessary time off needed to heal and get back out on the field."

We have combined the services of Axon Sports and Biodex Medical Systems, Inc. to perform a Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool (CCAT) and the Clinical Test for the Sensory Integration of Balance (CTSIB) to use for baseline and post injury comparison of cognitive and balance function.

NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) April 29, 2010 - "Institutions should record a baseline assessment for each student-athlete prior to the first practice. The same baseline assessment tools should be used post-injury at appropriate time intervals. The baseline assessment should consider one or more of the following areas of assessment. At a minimum, the baseline assessment should consist of the use of a symptoms checklist and standardized cognitive and balance assessments."
